Audiology Courses: Eligibility, Syllabus, Colleges, Admission

Audiology Course Details:

Audiology refers to the field that focuses on hearing and its related concerns. It involves the study, diagnosis, and treatment of hearing and other such conditions. The term is derived from ‘Audio’, meaning sound or hearing, and ‘Logy’, meaning ‘the study of’. Audiology is not a medical specialty, but rather an allied health field with its own profession and practices. Professionals, known as audiologists, help and educate patients with disorders such as hearing loss and similar ailments.

Audiology traces its origins to ancient Greece, when the historian Hippocrates wrote about hearing loss. He believed it was caused by the winds, weather conditions, and tinnitus. The field would evolve across centuries, eventually hitting a milestone in the 1920s with the invention of the audiometer. Audiology received a big boost in World War 2, where soldiers’ hearing loss was studied and diagnosed.

Meanwhile, in ancient India, Audiology was not an official field, but there were medical practices concerning ear treatment through Ayurveda and Siddha. Scriptures by ancient physicians described several ear diseases and their treatments. Audiology in India formally took off in 1964 with the establishment of the Topiwala National Medical College and the BYL Charitable Hospital in Mumbai. This was followed by the All India Institute of Speech and Hearing at Mysore in the same year.
