Audiology traces its origins to ancient Greece, when the historian Hippocrates wrote about hearing loss. He believed it was caused by the winds, weather conditions, and tinnitus. Meanwhile, in ancient India, Audiology was not an official field, but there were medical practices concerning ear treatment through Ayurveda and Siddha. Scriptures by ancient physicians described several ear diseases and their treatments. Audiology in India formally took off in 1964 with the establishment of the Topiwala National Medical College and the BYL Charitable Hospital in Mumbai. This was followed by the All India Institute of Speech and Hearing at Mysore in the same year.
