Architecture in India goes a long way back, with several empires leaving behind incredible monuments throughout history. Indian architecture is known to be diverse, with influences from native and foreign cultures. There are the Northern and the Dravidian styles of traditional architecture, as well as the Buddhist structures in the North-East. Then arrived the Indo-Islamic style from the Sultanate and the Mughals, later followed by European architecture from the Portuguese and British colonizers.

The ancient world beholds various examples of Indian architectural wonders, from the urban planning at Mohenjo-daro to the splendid temples of the Chola empire. The architectural contributions of the Mauryan and Gupta empires are also to be noted. The Taj Mahal is an iconic example of Indo-Islamic architecture in the medieval era. Meanwhile, the Rajputs and the Marathas constructed mighty forts across their empires. The British and other European colonizers also left behind town halls, manors, and churches.
